What is Confirmation and Reception in the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA)?
The Anglican Church requires a public and personal profession of faith from every adult believer
In Jesus Christ. Those baptized at an early age, when they are ready and have been duly prepared, are expected to make a mature public affirmation of their faith, fulfilling the vows their godparents made for them at their baptism. Confirmation and Reception is its liturgical expression – in the Prayer Book this is called a “Rite”.
Confirmation:
In confirmation, through the Bishop’s laying on of hands and prayer for daily increase in the Holy Spirit, God strengthens the believer for Christian life in the service of Christ and his kingdom.
Reception:
At the direction of the Bishop, and after public reaffirmation of their baptismal promises, those having made adult professions of faith in other Christian traditions (including those confirmed in other traditions) are received into the Anglican church – with prayer and the laying on of hands by the Bishop
Reaffirmation:
Confirmed believers who are part of the Anglican church, including those received from other traditions, may also reaffirm the pledges made to Christ with prayer and the laying on of hands by the Bishop.
Beginning Sunday August 4, and continuing for five more Sundays, a Confirmation class will be taught in McGlynn Hall in the Sunday School hour between services. This will be the (necessary) preparation for those who want to be confirmed or those (coming from other Christian traditions) who want to be received into the Anglican Church in North America (ACNA).
The Rite of Confirmation, Reception, and Reaffirmation can be found in the BCP 2019 (Book of Common Prayer), beginning on p. 175. On the web, use this link to find the same information.
